Android L improves battery life by 36%!

Android L is Google’s biggest update to its mobile operating system. We are expecting wonders when it comes to design, performance and new features, but it seems we didn’t give battery life improvements too much attention. This is probably due to us simply assuming it wouldn’t really be a huge jump, but we may have underestimated Google’s work.

Google’s “Project” tradition started with Jelly Bean and Project Butter, which made the UI incredibly smooth. KitKat offered Project Svelte, which allowed lower-end devices to run the software more efficiently. Next up is Project Volta, which is much more than a small improvement in battery efficiency.

The test

Ars Technica’s latest tests prove the new software boosts battery life by about 36%! This is no normal battery test, either. Ars Technica went all out and was as precise as possible. Both software versions were tested with the same Nexus 5 smartphone, managing to avoid battery variations. Screen brightness was set to 200 cd/m2, which was verified by a colorimeter.

The test consists of leaving the display on and loading a website every 15 seconds (over WiFi) until the device finally gives up and dies. This was ran on Android 4.4.4 first. Android L was then flashed to the same device and the test was applied again.

What is different about Android L?

Project Volta relies on different techniques to extend battery life. For starters, the new battery-saving mode is said to add an extra 90 minutes of battery life, but this test didn’t quite rely on that.

Google discovered waking the device for a second takes away about 2 minutes of standby time. And this doesn’t necessarily involve turning the screen on, this happens every time an app wants to perform a background action and wakes the processor. The new JobScheduler API allows these tasks to be grouped together, instead of having them act individually.

It’s also important to note Android is now using ART instead of Dalvik, which is known for offering better power efficiency.

Wrap up

This is only a glance at what Android L could offer. More apps need to be optimized to run well with Android L, meaning battery performance could get even better in the future! We are certainly more excited about Project Volta now that we have seen it in action.

worlds-10-most-beautiful-beaches

Yes, the beach made famous by the song! Actually, Ipanema became famous in the 1970s when women first started wearing tangas (precursor to today’s thong bathing suit) on its shores. That atmosphere of freedom is still alive and well in Rio de Janero. It is a city full of life and is more than tolerant of self expression – on the beach or off. Topless sunbathing is common and thongs are still the preferred beachwear. If you want to let your hair down and show off your hard work at the gym, Rio is the place to do it.

The park is already one of the country’s best, as Goliath joins an impressive roster of coasters including the mind-bending X Flight, one of the first wing coasters in the country, and American Eagle, the world’s tallest, fastest, and longest twin-racing wooden coaster.

In recent years, the popular Disney park has continued to stay at the forefront of family amusement, recently adding Enchanted Tales with Belle and The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, two immersive attractions that transport visitors into two of Disney’s most beloved animated films.

Six Flags Great Adventure: Jackson, NJ

10-best-us-theme-parks-for-2014

Few thrill rides can compare with the gut-wrenching, gravity-defying rush of Kingda Ka, the world’s tallest roller coaster and also its second-fastest, which leads an already-impressive pack of coasters in what has recently become the world’s largest amusement park, Six Flags Great Adventure. This season’s newest addition, Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom (opens in late May), will be added onto the structure of Kingda Ka and become the tallest drop tower in the world as it scales the Kingda Ka’s frame up to 415 feet in the air. Prepare, if you dare, to be dropped at a mind-blowing 90 mph.

Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay: Louisville, KY

10-best-us-theme-parks-for-2014

Kentucky Kingdom and Hurricane Bay finally reopens its gates on May 24th (after several failed attempts to revive the former Six Flags park), touting Lightning Run as its new centerpiece attraction. This coaster will lift riders up a chain-lift hill to a 100-foot drop, followed by inversions, banked turns, and stomach-turning bunny hills. While admiring the fresh coats of paint around the revitalized park, make sure to ride Thunder Rock, Kentucky Kingdom’s newly refurbished 3,000-foot-long wooden roller coaster featuring a 74-foot drop and enough negative air to make you question gravity.

Universal Studios Hollywood: Universal City, CA

10-best-us-theme-parks-for-2014

Already running to rave reviews in Universal Studios Orlando, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem has now arrived at Universal Studios Hollywood. The new attraction, a 4-D simulator that’s perfect for families, has riders don the signature “Minion Goggles” (3-D glasses) as you enter into a test to see if you are fit to become a minion. Sit back and prepare to be transported on a journey through their training facility as you encounter high-flying obstacles and hijinks. While there, don’t miss Transformers: The Ride, an incredible, immersive 3-D experience that throws you into the middle of an intergalactic war.

The Adventuredome: Las Vegas, NV

10-best-us-theme-parks-for-2014

Las Vegas, long the city of gambling thrills, is quickly becoming known for roller coaster thrills as well. The Adventuredome, located on the Circus Circus property, has taken a big step into the roller coaster pantheon. Their new steel coaster, El Loco opened this past February and is garnering much acclaim for its remarkable turns, which bank outside at a 45-degree angle. Paired with a jaw-dropping, 90-plus-degree drop, this is a coaster experience you will not soon forget. While at the Adventuredome, it’s hard to miss the original, twisting Canyon Blaster, running daily, rain or shine (because it’s all indoors).

Exynos ModAP is Samsung’s first chip with on-die LTE integration

Just yesterday Samsung’s Exynos division teased that it had something “exciting” in store for us. While we hoped this meant we’d see the official unveiling of the Note 4’s rumored Exynos 5433 CPU, it turns out that the company has instead outed a new quad-core SoC with integrated LTE.

Dubbed ModAP, the SoC is the first from the company to offer on-die LTE integration, and is built on a 28nm HKMG process. The ModAP offers Cat-4 LTE and a built-in image signal provider capable of supporting an 8MP sensor with 1080p video recording at 30fps.

While it’s obvious based on the specs that the ModAP is might more for budget and mid-range devices than flagships like the upcoming Note 4, on-die LTE integration is still a noteworthy accomplishment for Samsung and could help put it on a more even playing field with Qualcomm in the future.

Image show iOS 8 on the iPhone 6 Leaked

An screenshot that supposedly shows iOS 8 running on an iPhone 6 has been posted on Weibo, seemingly revealing what Apple’s upcoming new iOS build will look like on a bigger display. While the image is yet to be confirmed, it suggests the home screen will have a five by seven icon arrangement, including the five-app dock row, compared to the four by six grid on current 4-inch iPhones. Furthermore, the image has a rather strange resolution of 1,600 x 966 pixels that doesn’t really resonate with other screen resolutions Apple uses on existing iPhone and iPad models.

When it comes to apps, the screen is similar to the iPhone 5s, at least for a partial app arrangement. From Messages to Stocks, the apps are placed in the exact same order as in iOS 7’s default home screen. Also, four of the five dock apps are identical to the four apps on iOS 7’s dock.

However, there are several other apps present including apps from the iWork and iLife suites and, most importantly, new apps including Healthbook, CarPlay and a Watch Utility that takes central placement in the dock.

Other apps that were shown in recent leaks, including Preview, TextEdit and Tips, aren’t anywhere to be seen.

Weibo user @Zmeric did not say where he or she obtained the image from, or whether it’s a genuine iOS 8 screenshot image or a manufactured render based on existing iOS 8 leaks.

The full iOS 8 screenshot that was posted on Weibo follows below.

The three(ish) best steakhouses in the City

Five years ago, Hawskmoor was the steakhouse for those in the know – an unassuming little joint on Commercial Street with its charcoal pit and prime cuts chalked on a blackboard. It fed you proper and spat you back out into the world to spread the word (see above for ‘the word’).

Now that London’s red meat renaissance is in full swing, it’s very hard to find a bad cut. But not all steaks are equal. Here are FN’s favourites:

1) The defending champion: Hawksmoor

Still the king. Even the fat is to die for. You’ll take the bone home for your dog even if you don’t have a dog. Go with a big group and order the Chateaubriand. Or, don’t go with a big group and order the Chateaubriand anyway. The business has grown in recent years and now has private equity backing in the shape of Graphite Capital. There are four restaurants at Air Street, Guildhall, Seven Dials and the original (and best) on Commercial Street. The cocktails aren’t bad either.

2) The contender to the crown: Goodman

The martinis are very good. The steak is even better. Meat is usually taken at a table like a civilised person, and of course you can do this at Goodman. But after a good steak you can find yourself lethargic, belt undone, spilling over your chair like a tired balloon. Instead, why not order your cut at the bar with a plate of truffle chips alongside. It means you can keep the martinis coming at a rapid pace. The crisis is over, after all.

3) The value play: Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecôte

The best thing about this hidden gem on Throgmorton St is they don’t bring you all the food at once. Wait, wait, wait, don’t write it off. The concept is all-you-can-eat steak. The first serving is pretty hefty and by the time you’ve finished, you’ve forgotten there’s more to come. It’s like a free dessert, only the dessert is more steak. Le Relais de Venise is not for those who want choice, mind, as the menu is limited to steak, chips and salad. Quality over quantity and all that. In any case, this place excels at both.

Honourable moo-ntion: Gaucho

We can’t fail to mention this City favourite with its novel cowhide chairs – the only thing better than eating a cow is sitting on a cow while you eat a cow. In all seriousness, you’ll be hard pressed to find a steakhouse serving up better Argentinian wine.
